here's why to put something in standard form we simply use the equation y=mx+b. so we can't have anything but a coefficient of one for y. so we have to get everything to one side first and isolate y. now we did that our problem should look something like this: 2y=-x-8. so we divide the whole right hand side by 2, and we simply get: y=-1/2x-4.
